About the policy dialogue<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The policy dialogue is organized as part of and to conclude this year\u2019s World Health Day campaign on health inequities: \u201cBuilding a fairer, healthier world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We know by now that although COVID-19 infects those exposed indiscriminately, the risk of exposure and the severity of its health, social, and economic impacts are not being felt equally. Those with poor health and insecure lives and livelihoods before the pandemic are experiencing these negative impacts most, and this in turn places increased pressure on health systems that are already under stress from COVID-19. In addition to increases in morbidity and mortality, the exacerbation of inequities that existed before COVID-19, as well as the emergence of new vulnerabilities during the pandemic, may result in the deterioration of human capital and in uneven developmental outcomes in both the short and long term without timely and proportionate responses and a comprehensive recovery strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
